Most of us have experienced the continuously wet syndrome during summer
mornings. It starts when you jump into shower in the morning, dry off and get
dressed, go outside and become drenched in sweat before taking two steps. Most
of us cannot help it, we always have a natural shine or glisten during the
summer months. The two H’s, heat and humidity, are a part of nearly every
Philadelphian’s summer story. Philadelphia has experienced heat extremes and it may just be the beginning. As everyone’s social calendars start to
fill up with BBQs, cookouts, and outdoor festivals it is important to practice
heat and sun safety. Here are four simple safety tips provided by the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
- Drink plenty of water (even when you don’t feel thirsty)*
- If you can, stay indoors in a cool place or in a shaded area
- Wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses
*If your doctor limits
your fluid intake, contact them first.
While anyone can have a heat related illness, it is very
important that people who are at risk are checked on and cared for. Make sure
to reach out to someone especially if they are:
- A young child
- Some who is 65 years old or older
- Someone with a mental illness
- Someone who has another illness or diseases (such as heart disease or high blood pressure)
